Vampires, those dangerous, mythical creatures that roam the night and drink the blood of their victims, have been a subject of many stories and movies for years, becoming part of modern folklore with the publication of the Bram Stoker novel "Dracula." For people who enjoy things that are spooky or macabre, these creatures are often fascinating. If you are interested in vampires and want your home to reflect your tastes, it's possible to decorate almost any room with a vampire theme.

Colors

Vampires are primarily associated with the color red, the color of blood, and with black, a color we often associate with nighttime and death. Using either color as a repeating theme in a room is a simple way to both tie a room together decoratively and to bring vampires to mind. Using either of these colors as a primary wall color can be overwhelming, however. Try using these colors for furnishings, accents or rugs, then paint the walls a more neutral color that complements black or red well, such as brown or gray. Purples are sometimes a good alternative color choice, being a common color in gothic decor.

Themes

Vampires are mythical creatures with a specific set of abilities and weaknesses. This makes it possible to pick out aspects of vampire legends and use them to decorate a room. For instance, vampires are best known for drinking the blood of their victims. To bring this to mind, fill clear decorative bottles, especially decanter style bottles, with water dyed red with food coloring. Vampires are also said to be able to turn into bats, and so bat figurines or bats stenciled on furniture or walls will also have the right effect. Objects that bring to mind the themes of death, such as weaponry, bones, skulls or coffins, are also helpful for establishing the vampire motif.

Furniture

Most modern vampire legends and stories are derived in some way from Stoker's "Dracula," which was published in 1897. The stereotypical image of a vampire's home is often Victorian in style due to this book's influence. You can use this to your advantage. Decorate the room with heavy, dark and ornate furniture to bring to mind the Victorian era. Choose upholstery that is richly textured and goes along with the color scheme for your room; for instance, red velvet cushions would go excellently in a vampire-themed room. While it is possible to use more modern furnishings, using Victorian-style items to create a vampire-themed room is much simpler.

Accessories

Again, choosing more Victorian-style accessories will help you get the right atmosphere for the room. If you hang paintings in the room, use large and elaborate frames; old frames with leafing are at home in such a room. Candles, especially in candelabras, are an ideal feature in a vampire-themed room; however, you will likely not want these for your primary light source, so choose some old lamps or find a way to discreetly add some overhead lighting, such as in recessed lights. Be sure to keep the light low; vampires are creatures of night. Look for old books with fabric or leather covers to decorate shelves and bookcases. Add plenty of fabric items to emphasize a rich and luxurious feel to the room. For instance, decorative pillows on chairs, sofas or beds are perfect. Don't forget about curtains; one of the major legends involving vampires is that they cannot stand sunlight, so use heavy fabrics around your windows that could block out the sun.
