It all depends on the size of your room and the size of your bed.

What Sizes To Consider

There are a couple of different sizes of area rugs to consider in a bedroom. A 9×12 rug is very large—which can be a pro or con, depending on how you look at it. It gives you a ton of floor coverage and still showcases the design of the rug, but it's also the most expensive option. However, it's great for covering old floors or layering over old carpet and adding a plush feel underfoot. Just make sure you have at least six inches between the rug's edge and the wall so that it doesn't look like wall-to-wall carpeting.

An 8×10 area rug is one of the most popular rug sizes, making it easy to find a design you love in the right size. And this rug size will obviously be more affordable than a 9×12. However, if you pair this size with a king or queen bed, a lot of the rug's design will be covered by the bed.

If you have a smaller bed, like a full or twin, 6×9 area rugs are a good size to consider. Like an 8×10, it's also a pretty versatile size that can be used elsewhere in your home. While it would be much too small for a queen or king-size bed, with a full or twin, this rug size will give you plenty of coverage while still showing enough of the design to make a big impact. A 5×7 rug is the smallest area rug size you'd want to go for in a bedroom—but it's also the most affordable option.

The Best Rug Sizes for King Beds

If you're looking for the best rug size for a king bed, congratulations! You're living the dream, at least as far as beds go. King sized beds are the biggest of them all, so you'll need a larger rug size to go with it. Here are our recommendations:

King Bed With a 9×12 Rug

A 9×12 area rug is going to be your best bet for a master bedroom with a king-size bed. It's big enough to cover space on either side of the bed, along with plenty of space at the end. In fact, you'd have enough rug there to add a bench at the end of the bed, while still having walking space beyond it. And even if you have larger nightstands, a 9×12 rug will be wide enough to go past the edges of both nightstands. A 9×12 rug is certainly big, but it feels in proportion to the size of a king bed.

King Bed With an 8×10 Rug

An 8×10 area rug will cover the width of a king-size bed—but it definitely shows less on the sides and the end. To give yourself enough coverage at the end of the bed, especially if you have a bench at the end, you'll have to place the rug further away from your nightstands. This size of rug is a good choice for smaller master bedrooms that have king-size beds, as it won't overwhelm the space like 9×12 bedroom rugs would.

The Best Rug Sizes for Queen Beds

With a queen bed, you have less bedframe area, so you have a few more options when it comes to picking the right rug size. A lot of this will depend on your room size and shape, but here are our rug size recommendations for standard queen bed frames:

Queen Bed With a 9×12 Rug

If you have the square footage to support it, we also believe that a 9×12 area rug is the best size for bedroom rugs under a queen bed. It's big enough to cover a great deal of space on either side of the bed, at the end of the bed, and can also go under the front legs of your nightstands. We love that it covers a lot of floor space around bed so that a majority of the rug's design is visible. A 9×12 rug is large compared to a queen-size bed, which gives this look a  big design impact.

Queen Bed With an 8×10 Rug

An 8×10 area rug is a very popular size for rugs in general, and works really well with a queen-size bed in a master bedroom or guest room. It still covers the bed's width with about two feet of space on either side, but to have enough showing at the end of the bed you won't be able to have the rug's edge under your nightstands. 8×10 area rugs are more affordable and are easy to find—and they very much suit the proportions of a queen bed. The one downside to this size of rug is that much of the rug's design will be covered by the bed.

Queen Bed With Two 5×7 Rugs

If you want a more unique look, consider placing two matching 5×7 rugs on either side of your queen bed. This is a great look for long and narrow spaces, as the rugs cover the length of the room on both sides of the bed, giving your feet a soft place to land! With a pair of 5×7 rugs, you'll see almost the full design on both sides—which is great for rugs with beautiful designs and intricate patterns.

There's a versatility in this approach as well, as you can easily use this size of rug in other spaces throughout your home. And it may even be more affordable to buy two bedroom rugs of this size rather than one 9×12 rug. However, you do need two of them. And, since there's a portion of floor space that isn't covered by a rug at the end of the bed, you'd have to skip a bench or trunk at the end of the bed, as it just wouldn't look right.

The Best Rug Sizes for Full and Twin Beds

When it comes to the smallest two bed frame sizes, finding the right rug size depends a lot on your room size and bedroom layout. Here are our recommendations for the best rug sizes to go with your twin or full sized bed:

Full Bed With a 6×9 Rug

If you have a bed that's full-size, a 6×9 area rug is a great choice. It covers the bed's width, plus it's an affordable and versatile rug size. However, it doesn't give you quite as much coverage on the side or end of the bed as a 8×10 rug would, so most of the rug's design will be covered by the bed. It also won't come as close to your nightstand. However, if you're looking for small bedroom rugs, this is an ideal size to still give a high-impact look without wall-to-wall coverage.

Twin Bed With a 5×7 Rug

For a bedroom with a twin-size bed, you can get away with a much smaller rug. A 5×7 area rug provides coverage where you need it, covering the width of the bed and still having a bit at the end of the bed. However, it does cover up quite a bit of the rug's design. If you want a bit more floor coverage and more of the design to show, you could always bump up to a 6×8 rug. The great thing about 5×7 rugs are how affordable they are. They're great for a bedroom with a twin bed to keep it from sliding around on a hardwood floor—which is especially great for those with rambunctious kids! In a small bedroom where the twin bed is pushed against a wall, you could also flip the rug the long way and layer it under the front legs of your nightstand and along the exposed side of the bed.
